ADSS athletes inducted into the Wall of Fame

Four Alberni District Secondary School graduates were honoured for their athletic achievements during the Totem 62 Tournament on Friday night.

Ty Shannon, Kylee Abrahamson, Jason Hubbs and Andrew Sturgeon were inducted into the ADSS Athletic Wall of Fame for accomplishing a great level of success during their post-secondary athletic careers, of four or more years, or competing at the national level.

Shannon, 2006 graduate, was recognized for his extensive skills and achievements in rugby. He played on the University of Victoria’s rugby team, the Vikings, where he earned the premier league scoring champion in 2007. In 2004 he was a provincial and national gold medalist for under age 18,  in 2005 he was a provincial bronze medalist under 18 and in 2006 he was a provincial and national gold medalist for under 18. Shannon has travelled to Hong Kong, Australia, Dubai, South Africa, New Zealand and the USA on Sr. Men’s 7’s tours. He now plays for the Port Alberni Black Sheep rugby team.

Sturgeon, who graded in 2001, was inducted for his athletic career in basketball. He played college basketball at Malaspina College (now Vancouver Island University), the University of Northern British Columbia and Douglas College. In 2007 he was the British Columbia College Athlete Association (BCCAA) First Team All Star,  the Douglas College Male Athlete of the Year and the Sport BC Male Athlete of the year. In 2008 he was a National Collegiate Athletic Association provincial champion and he received the premier athlete award for top college male athlete. In 2009 Sturgeon began a professional basketball career in England for the London Capitals.

Abrahamson was inducted to the Wall for her achievements in badminton. In 2002 she was a college provincial gold medalist for ladies doubles, college national silver medalist for ladies doubles and college national silver team medalist. In 2003 she was a college provincial gold medalist for ladies doubles. In 2004 she earned the Canadian College Athlete of the Month. In 2007 Abrahamson was a college provincial silver medalist for ladies doubles, college national team silver medalist, and college national bronze medalist for ladies doubles.

Hubbs, grad of 1998, was inducted for his basketball career. He played basketball at Malaspina College in Nanaimo and Langara College in Vancouver. In 2000 he was a BCCAA Second Team All Star. In 2002 he earned BCCAA Second team All Star and Provincial Tournament All Star. In 2005 he was aa BCCAA First Team All Star, Provincial Tournament All Star, BCCAA and Basketball BC Player of the Year.

The four athletes received a plaque that will hang amongst many other ADSS athletes on the Athletic Wall of Fame near the gym.

Mike Roberts, ADSS athletic director, said the Totem committee choose the inductees after much review and consideration.

“We get nominations for review,” Roberts said. “You have to really be successful, an Olympian, or team Canada, or professional and be removed from school for10 years. There’s others on the radar but as Neelam (Parmar) says, their story hasn’t been told fully yet.”
