Tia Tsang scores 19 but Clan loses to Nighthawks

Tsang scored 19 points on 5-of-12 shooting, going 4-of-9 on threes.

ELLENSBURG, Wash. — Tia Tsang led all players with 19 points and Sophie Swant added 14 but that wasn't enough to lift the shorthanded Clan to victory as Simon Fraser University lost 88-65 to Northwest Nazarene in Great Northwest Athletic Conference women's basketball action on Saturday.

Simon Fraser played with just six players. Second leading scorer Nicole Vander Helm(13 ppg) was injured in the last game on Thursday while freshman guard Jessica Jones, the fourth leading scorer averaging 9.6 ppg did not make the road trip.  

Tsang got into the starting lineup for just the fifth time this season, and played 38 minutes – 12 minutes more than her season average. Tsang scored 19 points on 5-of-12 shooting, going 4-of-9 on threes. Swant added 14-points on 5-of-14 shooting and Tayla Jackson chipped in with 11 and seven boards.

But SFU's bench was outscored 46-4, suffering its third straight loss.

Trailing 45-35 at the half, SFU was outscored 27-19 in the decisive third quarter. The Clan falls to 8-10 overall and 3-7 in conference play while the Nighthawks improved to 12-3 overall and 8-2 in the GNAC.

SFU was out-rebounded 39-27 and gave up 24 points on 22 turnovers.

Five players reached double figures scoring for the Nighthawks, who connected on 33-of-64 shots from the field and used 12 players in the game. NNU had a 54-28 advantage in points in the paint.

Simon Fraser is on the road for a pair of games next week in Alaska and then is back home in the West Gym on Feb. 1 for "Celebrate Diversity". The game against Concordia will feature an exclusive number of SFU rainbow-coloured logoed t-shirts given away and campus groups will come together in a celebration of the University's diverse community.
