On Wednesday, in the heart of the downtown core, two of the top AAA/AA Vancouver schools played out their last regular season game. The Lord Byng Grey Ghosts played the King George Dragons. For a handful of players on King George was the last time they would play in their own gym as the seniors graduate.
The Grey Ghosts were pumped and full of energy as they beat Magee on Monday by 100 points. At the end of regulation on Monday night, the score was 119-19. They also knew this game would be a preview for whats to come in the Vancouver City Tournament next week which is being hosted at Windermere Secondary School. We may even get a chance to see these two teams square off depending on their tournament performance.
Right from the tip-off the game between the Dragons and Grey Ghosts the game was real close. The Grey Ghosts had a lot of height. #11 Nathan Bromige, who had also played in the U-17 BC team over the past summer was on the Grey Ghost squad. The big man was able to make buckets down in the paint and even around the perimeter.
With a very tight score the dragons were able to out score the Grey Ghost 29-26 at the half.
Time was winding down with just under two-minutes remaining, Grey Ghost #18 Peter Gibbons makes a basket to tie the game at 52.
King George brings up the ball and #6 Kyle Guerrero puts up a shot and misses as the ball bounces out for someone to grab a rebound. Dragon’s #14 Mohab Mundadi gets the offensive rebound as King George gets another chance. Several seconds later, Grey Ghost #2 Peter Chae gets called for holding and puts Dragon’s Yoel Teclehaimanot at the line as he sinks both free throws.
With just over 30 seconds remaining Grey Ghosts call a time out to regroup and set up a play. As they run their play a player with the ball steps on the line and forces a turnover. With only seconds remaining, the Grey Ghosts foul Yoel Teclehaimanot and Raz Gugasyan as they both go 1/2 on the free throw line. The final buzzer goes, Dragons take the win 56-52 at home in their final home game of the season.
The Dragons and Grey Ghosts will be at Windermere next week from February 7th-10th at Windermere Secondary School for the Vancouver City Championships. King George will look to repeat the AAA/AA Championship from last season and move on to the Lower Mainlands later this month.
