Richmond, B.C. - The Dolphin Basketball classic kicks off tomorrow for its 33rd year of competition. The three day tournament promises to be the best yet, hosting Men’s, Women’s, and Youth divisions as well as the famous Dunk Contest and Three-Point Contest.
The 4-on-4 Tournament will bring community together for a weekend of sunshine, basketball and good times. The grassroots tournament has been largely successful because of its ability to keep the community connected (and coming back year-after-year).
One of the tournament organizers, Bruce Watson said "Three words make Dolphin special; Family, friends, hoops. It's really that simple. So much goes into organizing tourney each and every year. Months of planning and lots of hard work by so many people. But boiled down to its prime ingredients, its all about family, friends and basketball. Simple really but thats our strength and what makes the tourney so much fun every summer!
Long time player turned tournament sponsor, Doug Plumb (Academy Basketball) said “Dolphin is where I found my community and knew I belonged. Having played in the US it was very easy to be disconnected from the local Vancouver Basketball scene. But, I knew for one weekend every summer Dolphin would give me everything I had missed for the past year - seeing friends, teammates, and of course playing in the prestigious tournament”.
Watson had no idea what he and his friends were getting into back in 1986 and had no intentions of running a tournament for 33 years.
"What started as a one day event with back yard printed tourney t-shirts grew each and every summer in the ensuing years. No way did we ever imagine carrying on for so long but the tourney has grown so much and been such a positive part of everyone’s lives. For myself, other than my life long friends and family relationships ive never been involved in any activity for as long as Dolphin."
And here we are in 2018.
The action will begin tomorrow afternoon with pool play going on through Sunday morning, before playoffs, the Dunk Contest, Three Point Contest, and of course the Championship games on Sunday evening. See below for the full schedule.
