Vancouver, B.C. - The Spring Season of The Vancouver Metro Basketball League ™ kicked off last night at The Richmond Olympic Oval with 24 Teams battling for their first wins. Check out the full game recaps below and the FULL ALBUM on the Vancouver Metro Basketball League™ Facebook Page.
The Party has returned and looked to kick off the season with confidence making the jump to Div I, but the gritty Agaveros imposed their aggressive style even with just 5 guys on the roster tonight. Once the Agaveros caught up to The Party in 2nd Quarter, the two teams just traded baskets with Agaveros getting offensive rebounds and second chance scoring. Finally with 12 minutes left in the game, The Party pulled away when they realized they couldn't play the Agaveros loose style of play. They slowed down and played with more control and jumped up 50-40. Eventually, having no subs wore down the Agaveros and The Party kept their 10 point lead to close the game.
Key players:
Agaveros: Jaime Fierro (16 pts, 10 rebounds, 2 assists, 2 steals)
The Party: Jordan Lum Tong (18 pts, 7 rebounds, 2 assists, 1 steal)
The night's most exciting matchup of the evening with 5 time champions, Stallions, taking on a new all-star squad of JATT. The newcomers played with confidence and tookt he early lead, but with 5:16 left to go in the first half, a surge by the Stallions forced JATT to take a time-out to regroup at 50-50. Stallions continued to roll and outscored JATT 10-4 to close out the half. The second half battled on for 5 minutes before any stoppage in play as each team was just running, gunning and hitting the open shooters. Brody continues to elevate his game and was hitting contested deep (I mean, deep) threes to ensure the Stallions could hold onto their 10 point lead. Great contribution by Eli Mason to the JATT lineup, but they couldn't hold off the big team effort by the Stallions.
Key players:
JATT: Elliott Mason (20 pts, 9 rebounds, 2 assists, 1 steal)
JATT: Justin (24 points, 6 rebounds, 1 assist, 1 steal)
JATT: Antonio (18 pts, 2 rebounds, 1 assista and 2 steals)
Stallions: Jitt Lohcham (25 pts, 5 rebounds, 1 assist, 1 steal)
Stallions: Brody Greig (22 points, 7 rebounds, 11 assists)
Stallions:Roger Sheung (18 points, 3 rebounds, 3 assists)
The first half of the game was really guys getting a feel for their shot and Bulldogs took the first half 45 over All Canadians 34. Bulldogs Nico went on a scoring streak from the 3 and cleaned up on boards to catapult the Bulldogs ahead of the All Canadians. Despite some good 3-point shooting by AJ and Lazar, the All Canadians just couldn't take the big offense of Gary and Nico.
Key players:
Bulldogs: Nico (34 points, 15 rebounds, 2 steals)
Bulldogs: Gary (28 points, 3 rebounds, 5 assists)
All Canadians: AJ (17 points, 3 rebounds)
All Canadians: Lazar (12 points, 4 rebounds)
All Canadians: Kent (9 points, 12 rebounds, 1 assist)
Newcomers Mandem looked strong in their opener against the Shamgodz with a convincing win. The game started out even, but the larger bench of Mandem wore down the Shamgodz. For Mandem, Royce led the way with a monster game 24 Points, 8 rebounds, 4 assists and 4 steals. For Shamgodz, Pep led the way with 20 points and 9 rebounds.
Newcomers Rice Farmers would come together nicely in their first game in the Vancouver Metro Basketball League™. With all players who stepped on the court scoring for the Rice Farmers, their balanced attack led them to victory against Mandem who was playing the second game of a back-to-back. Zach San Felipe led the way for the Rice Farmers with 18 points and 9 rebounds while Royce led Mandem with 34 points and 4 rebounds.
TTP looked strong in their season opener against The Buddy Guys. With a reloaded roster and the notable return of Kevin Anza from injury, TTP was consistent in their effort all night long. Ricky would lead the way with 20 points for TTP while Justin led The Buddy Guys with 16. Look for both of these teams to be strong contenders this season.
All Trouble would take their first game of the season with a strong performance against the OT Bandits. Tyrone would look good in this game knocking down 6 triples on his way to a game high 24 points. Jose Pep Llado would pace the OT Bandits with 15 points.
Teams return to the Richmond Olympic Oval next Monday November 4th for Week 2 Action. Game start at 7:00pm, 8:00pm, 9:00pm, and 10:00pm
