There’s so much attention being given to the prospects who have verbally committed to join Washington in 2015 that it’s easy to forget incoming freshmen Donaven Dorseyand Tristan Etienne, who comprise a 2014 class that didn’t exactly overwhelm recruiting analysts.
When they signed last November, it was believed that Dorsey, 6-6 wing out of Timberline High School in Lacey, Wash., might contribute immediately. He was ranked 60th nationally among small forwards by ESPN.com.
Meanwhile, Etienne, a 6-10 forward from Abbotsford, British Columbia, was considered a project who might need a little time to physically develop before making a meaningful impact.
However, those projections may need to be amended.
Etienne has impressed the UW coaching staff this summer and the freshman big man could land a spot in the rotation.
Here’s coach Lorenzo Romar on Etienne.
(Who’s been the biggest surprise?) “I wouldn’t say surprise, I would say is ahead of the pace that he thought he might be and that would be (Tristan Etienne).”
(Wow. Why Tristan?) “We talked to him about maybe he would redshirt. Maybe he wouldn’t. We’ll see where you are. And just in our drills, he has a high basketball IQ. It’s very important for him to do the right things and he makes plays. He’s productive.”
